Why Stanchion Damage Matters
The dust wiper and oil seal move across the stanchion surface every time the fork compresses.

Damage located within the active travel area is generally more likely to affect sealing than damage above the maximum seal-contact area.

A surface repair cannot restore the strength of a cracked, bent or severely damaged upper tube.

How the Surface Repair Is Completed
The damaged area is cleaned and inspected under suitable lighting. Any raised material or sharp edges are carefully removed without unnecessarily enlarging the damaged area.
Suitable scratches or chips may be filled using a compatible repair material. The area is then carefully finished so the seal can pass over the repair without contacting a sharp edge.
The objective is to restore a smooth functional sealing surface. The repair will not recreate the original factory coating or make the cosmetic damage completely invisible.

Stanchion scratch repair is completed to improve the functional sealing surface and reduce further seal damage.
The repaired area may remain visible because the original anodised or coated finish cannot be recreated locally during a workshop surface repair.
A visible repair does not necessarily affect function when the surface has been finished correctly and the upper tube remains structurally serviceable.
Prevent repeat leakage
Fork Seals May Need Replacement
A sharp scratch can damage the dust wiper or oil-seal lip. Repairing the stanchion without replacing a damaged seal may allow the fork to continue leaking.
The seals and foam rings are inspected when the fork is opened. Replacement may be recommended where the seal has been cut, contaminated or worn.
Seal replacement and additional servicing are quoted separately unless included in the approved work.
Fork condition and maintenance
Additional Fork Servicing May Be Required
The lower-leg assembly normally needs to be removed so the damaged area, seals and internal condition can be inspected correctly.
If contamination has entered the fork or the service interval has been reached, a 50-hour lower-leg service or complete 100-hour service may be recommended.
Any additional servicing, seals, bushings or replacement parts will be confirmed before the work is completed.

Clear photos can help the workshop provide an initial opinion before the fork is sent.
Photograph the damage from several angles in bright light. Include one close-up image and one wider image showing where the scratch is located on the stanchion.
Photos cannot always confirm the true depth of the damage. Final repair approval requires physical inspection after the area has been cleaned.

You can deliver the fork directly to the CJSuspension Queenstown workshop or send it from anywhere in New Zealand.
Clean off heavy dirt without rubbing contamination into the damaged area. Protect both stanchions, the crown, steerer, lower legs, adjusters and axle interface during transport.
Do not attempt to sand, file or fill the scratch before sending the fork, as this can make the damage more difficult to assess or repair.

Can every stanchion scratch be repaired?
No. Repair suitability depends on the depth, size, position and surrounding tube condition. Deep structural damage, bending, cracking or extensive coating loss may require upper-tube replacement.
Can you confirm the repair from photos?
Photos can provide an initial indication, but the true depth and condition may not be clear until the fork is physically inspected and the damaged area is cleaned.
Will the repaired scratch be invisible?
Not necessarily. The repair is intended to restore a smooth functional sealing surface. The damaged area may remain visible because the original factory coating cannot be recreated locally.
Will repairing the scratch stop the fork leaking?

No. Incorrect sanding, filing or filling can enlarge the damaged area, remove additional coating and make the repair more difficult. Leave the damage untouched for assessment.

Can I send my fork from outside Queenstown?
